Cyclists: know the worth of your home insurance

A recent news story saw a cyclist face a £100,000 bill after knocking over a passer-by on their phone. In light of the financial and physical damage done, the cyclist urged others to take out insurance. But what if your home insurance already has you covered?

Andy, our Performance & Development Manager at Lloyd & Whyte, recalls the time he got stuck between a bike and a hard hedge, and how his home insurance came into it:

In early May, I was out for an afternoon ride on my new(ish) bike, enjoying cycling through the Devon countryside. I was following a couple of cars down a single track lane, when a car came around a bend in the opposite direction. The cars I was following duly stopped, and I caught the loose grit and gravel in the centre of the road.

By the time I’d managed to get out the gravel and regain control, I knew I wouldn’t be able to stop in time before hitting the car in front. I therefore (somewhat optimistically) thought that there would be a sufficient gap between the car and hedge – there wasn’t!

As well as getting wedged head first in a holly hedge (very prickly and not recommended), my bike damaged the rear wing and bumper – nearly £500 damage in total.

I was very relieved to find that my Home Insurance with Ageas provided cover under the personal liability section – this covers any damage to third party property which I was legally liable to pay. Furthermore, damage to my bike was covered under contents as a non-mechanically propelled vehicle.

Having submitted the claim to Ageas, they agreed to the claim with no quibbling, and the claim settled within a week, with no excess to pay either.

With the policy Andy has through Lloyd & Whyte, bicycles are covered up to £5,000. You are also covered for liability if you injure someone else.
